Review by Doug Phillips

UATG Have put a great deal of effort into their current production of “As You Like It”, and it shows. Each actor’s performance is solid (there are no weak links here), and Megan Dansie’s direction shows much precision and consideration.

Weather conditions meant the performance I saw was in the Little Theatre at Adelaide Uni. The Little Theatre is a comfortable home environment for UATG; however, it was easy to see that this play was always intended for an outdoor venue. The entire set consisted of one plastic pot plant, which although unavoidable, still felt lacking.

Cast stand-outs are Jean Collins (Rosiland), Tim Edhouse (The Duke), and Guy Henderson (Touchstone). Each knew their character and role well. Christina Devetzidis ‘s portrayal of Celia was faultless. Her ability to stay in character, involved, and real, without detracting from her co-stars’ moments was truly impressive.

Jasmin Muller also deserves her own mention. Her 60s costuming was realistic and interesting.

At times I struggled with the storyline, but I suspect this had more to do with my lack of affinity with Shakespeare and not the production.

Often considered one of his funniest works, I think the Bard would be happy with this rendition.
