Arthur’s son Eric, has an obvious drinking problem. After dinner, Arthur speaks about the importance of self-reliance, his approaching knighthood, and about how "a man has to look after himself and his own." Inspector Goole arrives, interrupting the evening and proceeds to make a number of assertions about the actions of various members of the family and implying that each had a role in a young woman’s death.
